DESCRIPTION:‘Farewell\, Alabama\,’ an exhibit of paintings and drawings by Alabama artist Sue Blackshear will open on July 6\, 2016 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Betak/Frangoulis Gallery at Canterbury Chapel in Tuscaloosa. All are welcome to the reception. Sue Blackshear grew up in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. Art was always among her many pursuits\, which included zoology\, history\, and language studies. Sue’s paintings in oil and watercolor celebrate the natural world around her\, specializing in landscapes and flowers. Sue Blackshear has been an active artist in the Southeast and Iowa for many years. She is planning a move to California\, so this will be her last show in Alabama for now.

DESCRIPTION:The W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library has been in a semester-long collaboration with Meagan Morris and Rebecca Theus\, Masters students in the History Department. Their research\, culminating in an exhibit under the direction of John Giggie (History) and Kate Matheny (Hoole)\, takes a historiographic approach to the works of Joel Chandler Harris (1845-1908)\, a southern author with lasting popular appeal but a more complex literary reputation. The exhibit looks at his take on the Jim Crow South and how his tales are spread among common stories and art today.

DESCRIPTION:The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will host an exhibit of works by Livingston\, Ala. artist David Gosselin at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. The display of paintings will be open to the public June 3-July 29\, 2016 in both The Arts Council Gallery and The University of Alabama Gallery. An opening reception will be held on June 3 from 5-8 p.m. during First Friday. Originally from R.I.\, David Gosselin attended Livingston University (now The University of West Alabama) where he studied art\, biology and history. He has continued to create art\, but has made his primary income by painting houses. The artist has won awards and received recognition in the West Alabama and East Mississippi art communities numerous times including competitions and exhibits at the Coleman Center for the Arts in York\, Ala. and the Meridian\, Miss. Museum of Art.

DESCRIPTION:We are honored and excited to announce the Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum will host an exhibit from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute from June 28th to September 24th! The exhibition is composed of winning entries in a nationwide high school creative expression contest based on Spike Lee’s Oscar (R) nominated documentary about the 1963 Birmingham\, Alabama church bombing that took the lives of four young girls. In 1998\, Home Box Office (HBO) announced winners of its nationwide high school creative expression contest. Winners\, chosen on the basis of originality\, style and content\, were selected in four categories–art\, audio/video\, essay and poetry. Four grand-prize winners were selected from among 4\,125 entries. The four winners each received a college scholarship and were honored during an awards ceremony at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. During the ceremony\, HBO presented BCRI with this collection of the top entries.

SUMMARY:Black Warrior SUP Championship 2016
DESCRIPTION:This is the first ever SUP race on the Black Warrior River in downtown Tuscaloosa Alabama hosted by Smith Lake Paddle Boards. Race will be held at The Tuscaloosa Riverwalk Condominiums. The 6 mile course and 3 mile course will be part of the Southern Stoke Paddle Series. Both race will also be the second and final legs of the Black Warrior SUP Championship. The first race of the championship will be Paddle at the Rock on May 30th at Smith Lake Park in North Alabama.

DESCRIPTION:The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will host an exhibit of works by artist Laquita Thomson at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. The display of cyanotypes will be open to the public Aug. 5-26\, 2016 in The Arts Council Gallery. An opening reception will be held on Aug. 5 from 5-8 p.m. during First Friday. The exhibit will feature cyanotype photograms from Thomson’s “Renovation” series and straight cyanotypes from the “Photographing the South” series. She often explores alternative photographic processes such as cyanotypes\, printing outside in the sun. For the two series presented here\, Thomson used the sun\, as well as a light table for developing the images. Laquita Thomson is an Associate Professor at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson\, Tenn. where she teaches Studio Art and Art History.
