SUMMARY:Artist Russ Warren
DESCRIPTION:A painter in the Neo-Expressionist style\, Russ Warren draws inspiration from Spanish masters such as Velázquez\, Goya and Picasso\, as well as from Mexican folk art and the American Southwest. His 45-year career is examined in the exhibitionRuss Warren: Works 1971-2015\, on view at the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at The University of Alabama from October 29-December 4\, 2015. \nWarren will be on campus to lecture about his work on Monday\, November 2 at 4:30 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. A reception for the artist will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the gallery at 103 Garland Hall. \nRuss Warren is openly fascinated with historically monumental painters. His storied approach to painting engages the viewer as witness to the moment depicted. He embraces the ambivalence and uncertainty of all creatures\, each facing life and death. Carter Ratcliff of Art in America has said of Warren’s work: “People and dogs and horses are equals…so intimately connected that everyone seems to be everyone else’s alter ego.” \nBorn in Washington\, D.C.\, Warren grew up in Texas. He studied under painter Earl Staley at the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, Texas\, from 1969 to 1971. He earned his B.F.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1973 and his M.F.A. in 1977 from the University of Texas at San Antonio. \nThis exhibition was organized with Les Yeux du Monde\, Charlottesville\, Virginia. An illustrated catalogue features an introduction by Davidson College professor of art history Shaw Smith\, an interview by UA associate professor of art and gallery director William Dooley and an essay by Art in America contributing editor Carter Ratcliff. \nRuss Warren has works placed in numerous public and private collections. His paintings were included in the 1981 Whitney Biennial and he exhibited at Phyllis Kind Gallery (Chicago and New York). This exhibition will also travel to Davidson College in North Carolina.

SUMMARY:"The Strange Meditation of Writing" Reception By Aynslee Moon
DESCRIPTION:Aynslee Moon (UA art alumna) is exhibiting a series of charcoal drawings and small sculptural drawings in the Main Entry Gallery. These drawings explore the uncertainty and beauty found in the act of waiting. The subjects in each drawing\, whether they are a figure\, a landscape\, a body of water\, or simply a horizon line\, create parallels between memories\, untraveled spaces\, and the passage of time.

SUMMARY:First Friday: "Fertile Ground" By Doris Derby
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Doris A. Derby\, a documentary photographer and civil rights activist\, will donate an historic photograph from the civil rights era to The University of Alabama during the opening reception of an exhibit featuring her photographs. \nImages featured in the University Gallery exhibition include ones which depict the people\, places and activities of the following civil rights organizations based in Mississippi: the Mississippi Action Program (Headstart pre-school)\, the Liberty House Handcraft and Marketing Cooperatives of the Poor Peoples Corporation; the Delta Ministry; the Free Southern Theater\, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; and a collage of Derby’s Civil Rights activities. Derby took these photographs between 1963 and 1972.  According to Derby\, “The everyday work of local people was as important to the civil rights movement as were the more familiar leaders\, and the dramatic protests and confrontations\, yet these scenes are not part of our collective memory of the movement.” \nCo-sponsors include:  University of Alabama College of Arts and Sciences\, New College\, the UA Diversity Committee\, the Departments of American Studies\, Art and Art History\, and Gender and Race Studies\, the Summersell Center for the Study of the South.  Crossroads will be listed on the publicity materials as Crossroads Community Center\, Division of Community Affairs. \nGallery open Weekdays from 9 am – 5 pm & the First Friday of every month Noon to 8 pm.
