SUMMARY:Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Join us to MAKE STRIDES against Breast Cancer on October 17\, 2015 at Government Plaza in downtown Tuscaloosa! Register your team today! The American Cancer Society is the leader in the fight to end breast cancer. We invest more in breast cancer research than any other cancer type- to find\, prevent\, treat\, and  cure the disease. We’re in every community providing free information and services to people fighting the disease. Today\, one in every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer turns to us for health and support. Over the past 20 years\, we have helped more than 4 million women get potentially lifesaving breast cancer screening tests. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States\, other than skin cancer. it is the second leading cause of cancer death in women\, after lung cancer. Come support and help make a difference in your community! For more information contact tuscaloosaALstrides@cancer.org or call (205) 918-3220.

These drawings explore the uncertainty and beauty found in the act of waiting. The subjects in each drawing\, whether they are a figure\, a landscape\, a body of water\, or simply a horizon line\, create parallels between memories\, untraveled spaces\, and the passage of time.

SUMMARY:“Monitoring” Life in Art: Derek G. Larson and Marc Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:September 23–October 23\, 2015\nSella-Granata Art Gallery\, Woods Hall\nReception: October 2\, 5-8 p.m. \nWork by artists Derek G. Larson and Marc Mitchell will be on exhibit in the Sella-Granata Art Gallery\, September 23 – October 23\, 2015. The public is invited to a reception on Friday\, October 2\, from 5-8 p.m. (First Friday). \n[mon-i-ter] is a collection of paintings\, sculptures and projected animations by Larson and Mitchell. Inspired by recent NSA surveillance rulings\, the artists began tracking their own daily activities by using fitness trackers and productivity apps. They logged the number of steps taken in a day\, calories burned\, hours spent on the internet\, hours slept\, etc. The project became a self-imposed exchange of data between the two\, resembling a devout practice in observance.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Doris A. Derby\, a documentary photographer and civil rights activist\, will donate an historic photograph from the civil rights era to The University of Alabama during the opening reception of an exhibit featuring her photographs. \nImages featured in the University Gallery exhibition include ones which depict the people\, places and activities of the following civil rights organizations based in Mississippi: the Mississippi Action Program (Headstart pre-school)\, the Liberty House Handcraft and Marketing Cooperatives of the Poor Peoples Corporation; the Delta Ministry; the Free Southern Theater\, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; and a collage of Derby’s Civil Rights activities. Derby took these photographs between 1963 and 1972.  According to Derby\, “The everyday work of local people was as important to the civil rights movement as were the more familiar leaders\, and the dramatic protests and confrontations\, yet these scenes are not part of our collective memory of the movement.” \nCo-sponsors include:  University of Alabama College of Arts and Sciences\, New College\, the UA Diversity Committee\, the Departments of American Studies\, Art and Art History\, and Gender and Race Studies\, the Summersell Center for the Study of the South.  Crossroads will be listed on the publicity materials as Crossroads Community Center\, Division of Community Affairs. \nGallery open Weekdays from 9 am – 5 pm & the First Friday of every month Noon to 8 pm.

SUMMARY:“Monitoring” Life in Art: Derek G. Larson and Marc Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Work by artists Derek G.
