SUMMARY:First Friday: "Fertile Ground" By Doris Derby
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Doris A. Derby\, a documentary photographer and civil rights activist\, will donate an historic photograph from the civil rights era to The University of Alabama during the opening reception of an exhibit featuring her photographs. \nImages featured in the University Gallery exhibition include ones which depict the people\, places and activities of the following civil rights organizations based in Mississippi: the Mississippi Action Program (Headstart pre-school)\, the Liberty House Handcraft and Marketing Cooperatives of the Poor Peoples Corporation; the Delta Ministry; the Free Southern Theater\, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; and a collage of Derby’s Civil Rights activities. Derby took these photographs between 1963 and 1972.  According to Derby\, “The everyday work of local people was as important to the civil rights movement as were the more familiar leaders\, and the dramatic protests and confrontations\, yet these scenes are not part of our collective memory of the movement.” \nCo-sponsors include:  University of Alabama College of Arts and Sciences\, New College\, the UA Diversity Committee\, the Departments of American Studies\, Art and Art History\, and Gender and Race Studies\, the Summersell Center for the Study of the South.  Crossroads will be listed on the publicity materials as Crossroads Community Center\, Division of Community Affairs. \nGallery open Weekdays from 9 am – 5 pm & the First Friday of every month Noon to 8 pm.

SUMMARY:K-12 Fellowship Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Paul R. Jones envisioned his collection as a resource to be shared with Alabamians\, and as a way to educate students about the importance of art in life. The Paul R. Jones K-12 Fellows program is designed to actualize this vision. \nThe Jones Fellows program provides an opportunity for public school teachers to develop innovative curricula inspired by the collection\, and pairs teachers with undergraduate and graduate students from The University of Alabama who support the implementation of standards-based curricula. \nElementary and middle school students from the Tuscaloosa City Schools get the chance to visit the Paul R. Jones Gallery to view an exhibition of art from the Jones collection organized around the theme of identity. Prepared especially for them\, this exhibition inspired student-created artwork that was exhibited in the gallery in December. \n(University Place Elementary and Bryant High)

SUMMARY:“Monitoring” Life in Art: Derek G. Larson and Marc Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:September 23–October 23\, 2015\nSella-Granata Art Gallery\, Woods Hall\nReception: October 2\, 5-8 p.m. \nWork by artists Derek G. Larson and Marc Mitchell will be on exhibit in the Sella-Granata Art Gallery\, September 23 – October 23\, 2015. The public is invited to a reception on Friday\, October 2\, from 5-8 p.m. (First Friday). \n[mon-i-ter] is a collection of paintings\, sculptures and projected animations by Larson and Mitchell. Inspired by recent NSA surveillance rulings\, the artists began tracking their own daily activities by using fitness trackers and productivity apps. They logged the number of steps taken in a day\, calories burned\, hours spent on the internet\, hours slept\, etc. The project became a self-imposed exchange of data between the two\, resembling a devout practice in observance.

SUMMARY:Tuscaloosa Southern Exposure Screening
DESCRIPTION:  \nTUSCALOOSA\, Ala. — The University of Alabama Environmental Council invites the public to a free film viewing and discussion at 7 p.m. Monday\, Jan. 27\, in the Ferguson Theatre on campus. \nThe Southern Exposure event\, sponsored by the Southern Environmental Law Center\, features a collection of documentaries designed to raise awareness about environmental issues that affect Alabama’s natural treasures as well as Alabamians’ health\, economy and quality of life. \nFollowing the film viewing\, Dr. Ellen Spears\, assistant professor of American studies at UA\, and UA alumna Caitlin Williams of the law center will speak and answer questions about issues highlighted in the documentaries. \nBy educating participants on the causes and effects of environmental concerns\, the UA Environmental Council  seeks to teach them how those issues can be prevented by making greener changes in their lives. \n“These films give a great overview of the environmental issues in our back yard\, all while reminding us of the importance of maintaining the beautiful natural landscape that Alabama already has\,” said Maddy Lewis\, Environmental Council president. “As students at UA\, learning about the problems that face our immediate environment is vital to creating a culture of sustainability.”
