SUMMARY:First Friday: "Fertile Ground" By Doris Derby
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Doris A. Derby\, a documentary photographer and civil rights activist\, will donate an historic photograph from the civil rights era to The University of Alabama during the opening reception of an exhibit featuring her photographs. \nImages featured in the University Gallery exhibition include ones which depict the people\, places and activities of the following civil rights organizations based in Mississippi: the Mississippi Action Program (Headstart pre-school)\, the Liberty House Handcraft and Marketing Cooperatives of the Poor Peoples Corporation; the Delta Ministry; the Free Southern Theater\, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; and a collage of Derby’s Civil Rights activities. Derby took these photographs between 1963 and 1972.  According to Derby\, “The everyday work of local people was as important to the civil rights movement as were the more familiar leaders\, and the dramatic protests and confrontations\, yet these scenes are not part of our collective memory of the movement.” \nCo-sponsors include:  University of Alabama College of Arts and Sciences\, New College\, the UA Diversity Committee\, the Departments of American Studies\, Art and Art History\, and Gender and Race Studies\, the Summersell Center for the Study of the South.  Crossroads will be listed on the publicity materials as Crossroads Community Center\, Division of Community Affairs. \nGallery open Weekdays from 9 am – 5 pm & the First Friday of every month Noon to 8 pm.

SUMMARY:K-12 Fellowship Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Paul R. Jones envisioned his collection as a resource to be shared with Alabamians\, and as a way to educate students about the importance of art in life. The Paul R. Jones K-12 Fellows program is designed to actualize this vision. \nThe Jones Fellows program provides an opportunity for public school teachers to develop innovative curricula inspired by the collection\, and pairs teachers with undergraduate and graduate students from The University of Alabama who support the implementation of standards-based curricula. \nElementary and middle school students from the Tuscaloosa City Schools get the chance to visit the Paul R. Jones Gallery to view an exhibition of art from the Jones collection organized around the theme of identity. Prepared especially for them\, this exhibition inspired student-created artwork that was exhibited in the gallery in December. \n(University Place Elementary and Bryant High)

SUMMARY:A Haunting at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:“A Haunting at the Museum” is a family event hosted by the Alabama Museum of Natural History and the Gorgas House Museum. Visitors join museum staff for lantern-lit guided tours of campus where they delve a little deeper into University history. Participants are also invited to visit each museum\, participate in scavenger hunts\, and hear ghost stories told in the halls. And if visitors are lucky\, they may just hear the sword of a ghostly Josiah Gorgas clanging against the railing as he walks up and down the stairs of his home. Now in its fifth year\, “A Haunting at the Museum” will continue to share the history of UA. The will be held on October 27 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. starting at Smith Hall (ALMNH). This is a free and fun for all ages event. Parking can be found behind the museum in the parking lot off of Hackberry Lane or an adjacent parking lot nearby. Please call 348-7550 if you have any questions or need help with directions.
