“Family Matters: LGBTQ Youth Persepectives”

October 20, 2015 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Family Matters: LGBTQ Youth Perspectives is a photography exhibition by Birmingham artist, Carolyn Sherer. The exhibition features 12 portraits of self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) youth with accompanying narratives about their perceptions of family acceptance. Family Matters is aimed at initiating a conversation about social change and family acceptance for LGBTQ youth. This exhibition is a collaborative effort with the Magic City Acceptance Project (MCAP), presented by Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO) as part of an initiative to provide broader, more inclusive services to the LGBTQ community. The exhibition premiered at the Civil Rights Institute in the Spring of 2014 and a portion of the exhibition was displayed at Art Basel in Miami, the world’s premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works. The exhibition is currently touring the state of Alabama through 2017, made possible in part by a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities
