Bloody Tuesday was a march that occurred on June 9, 1964 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement. The march was both organized and lead by Rev. T. Y. Rogers and was to protest against segregated drinking fountains and restrooms in the county courthouse. The protest consisted of a group of peaceful African Americans walking from The First African Baptist Church to the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse; however, protesters did not get very far before being beaten, arrested, and tear gassed by not only police officers standing outside the church, but as well a mob of angry white citizens. These events were similar to Bloody Sunday during the Selma to Montgomery marches, which took place a year later and received an extensive amount of media coverage, while there were no journalists to capture the events of Bloody Tuesday. During Bloody Tuesday thirty-three men, women, and children had to be hospitalized, and ninety-four African Americans were arrested by police, this all taking place right outside the church with the marchers not having an opportunity to get to the courthouse. Annually First African Baptist Church commemorates those brave men, women and children who stood up for equality, and human rights in the face of a world who thought they deserved less simply because of the color of their skin. Remembering and acknowledging the past can bring change and reconciliation in the future. The Tuscaloosa Civil Rights History Task Force will feature First African Baptist Church, along with other important sites on the soon to be launched Tuscaloosa Civil Rights Trail later in June. This trail will allow Tuscaloosa’s important role in the Civil Rights Movement to be chronicled for tourists from around the world, and in our own backyard in Alabama to learn about this important history. The 54th Annual Bloody Tuesday Commemorative is brought to you through a collaborative effort between the 10-4 Corporation and the Tuscaloosa Civil Rights Task Force in cooperation with the loving congregation of the First African Baptist Church. All are welcome!

Tuscaloosa, AL 35406

Lake Nicol is an attractive, easily accessible, well-maintained, and popular wooded park on a substantial lake. It draws many local visitors, so the best birding is achieved on weekdays, early or late in the day, and days when traffic should be less than peak. Look for pine-woods birds all year, a few waders and shorebirds, migrant songbirds in spring and fall, and a few ducks and geese in winter.

Lake Lurleen State Park

County: Tuscaloosa  |   Attraction Types: Birding Trail, Outdoor Recreation, Park

Coker, AL 35452

Lake Lurleen State Park is named after Alabama’s only female governor. Lurleen Wallace, the wife of former Governor George C. Wallace, was a native of Tuscaloosa County. As Governor she was instrumental in funding a major renovation project of Alabama State Parks.

Lake Lurleen State Park is located 9 miles Northwest of the cities of Tuscaloosa and Northport, Alabama and is 14 miles from the campus of the University of Alabama, home of the “Crimson Tide.”

Lake Lurleen is one of Alabama’s larger state parks, and it offers a lot to the visitor. Be sure to keep an eye out for the birds as you enjoy the hiking trails, lake and scenic beauty, as this is one of the sites along the West Alabama Birding Trail. There are scattered shade trees past the entrance gate and songbirds are often present. In spring, expect Eastern Bluebirds, Eastern Kingbirds and abundant numbers of Cliff Swallows. To the left of the fishing pier begins a series of walking trails, some of which parallel the shoreline. Orchard Orioles and Red-headed Woodpeckers may be observed in the pines. Follow the trails to find a good variety of songbirds in the trees on the left hand (inland) side. This is a particularly good area to search for migrants in spring and fall, and for foraging mixed-species feeding flocks in the colder months.

Lake Harris

County: Tuscaloosa  |   Attraction Types: Birding Trail, Outdoor Recreation

west alabama image

Tuscaloosa, AL 35406

Lake Harris is located on Yellow Creek and was one of two reservoirs for drinking water for the city of Tuscaloosa. The dirt entrance road is three miles in length and passes through a considerable stretch of early second-growth scrub. Prairie Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chats, Eastern Kingbirds and Blue Grosbeaks are quite abundant from April through September. You will find Field Sparrows, Eastern Towhees, Eastern Bluebirds, American Goldfinches, and Gray Catbirds on a permanent or nearly permanent basis. The second-growth habitat predominates on the left (southeast) side of the road, while there is mixed-age pine-oak woods along the right (northwest) side.

The taller, more mature woods have a broad range of songbirds from Wood Thrushes and Hooded Warblers to Red-eyed Vireos, Orchard Orioles, Summer Tanagers, Black-and-white Warblers and most of the state’s native woodpeckers. Red-tailed Hawks and Great Horned Owls hunt the open areas. The road’s edge should be an excellent location for Chuck-will’s-widow, and short-grass open areas adjacent to dense woods may be good for American Woodcocks from mid-winter through spring. Learn more about this West Alabama Birding Trail site here.
